Hi, my name is Susan Mercado-Gudino, I’m a native Arizonan and I have spent most of my life growing up and still living in South Phoenix. Like many of you, my family and I came from very humble beginnings and although they were not able to give me many material things they did teach me what its meant to have a strong work ethic, strong values, and how important it is to help others when they are in need, and I think most of you will agree that our community is in need of good well-paying jobs, cleaner and safer neighborhoods, and a city council that has the gumption to be transparent and inclusive with the issues no matter how contentious they may be.
I attended South Mountain High School, and for the last 30 years I have seen our families continuously falling victim to the political agendas of others and frankly, our families often get the shaft in the end.
Whether it is an Airport Expansion or a New Light Rail system, our district needs to have a strong voice that understands the issues of every working family. Because a business, big or small, is not just a building, or a place of transactions, not in South Phoenix, it’s our livelihood, it’s how we afford to send our kids to school with lunch money, put food on the table, and how we take care of our nana’s and tata’s.
Look, I know what it’s like to bootstrap, my family always taught me to live within my means, and as much as I wanted to attend college it wasn’t obtainable for me without going into debt. I have made it possible for my son Jacob, and I am proud of that, and if elected I’ll work even harder to bring those opportunities to you and the next generation to come. I’m Susan Mercado-Gudino and that’s why I’m Running for Phoenix Council District 7.
